Introduction to the Mkunumbi Community Forest Association Representatives

It was a pleasure visiting the site before Christmas for the community engagement workshops as we were formally introduced to the Mkunumbi Community Forest Association (CFA) representatives. The discussion gave us valuable insights into the current condition of the mangroves, key threats facing the ecosystem, and the existing harvesting plan guiding sustainable use.

This session provided an opportunity to introduce our work, explain the concept of carbon credits, and outline the project’s community benefits. As provided for under the Kenyan Climate Change Act (2024), communities will receive 40% of net annual project income, together with employment in mangrove restoration activities and support for income-diversifying initiatives such as beekeeping and eco-tourism.

Our sincere thanks go to the Kenya Forest Service for organising and chairing the community workshop, with participation from a GIS expert, Mangrove Officer, County Forest Conservator, and Forest Station Managers. Special appreciation is extended to the Regional Forest Conservator (RFC) – Coast Region, Kenya Forest Service, for their guidance and support throughout the engagement.

A big thank you to the Avatari Development Kenya team for their outstanding contributions. Thoughtful presentations were shared by our CEO, Harry Cook; local representative, Jeremiah Muia; and Project Manager, Rita Mulatya, supported by our Technical Consultant, Peter Mwangi. We also appreciate the critical role of Mangrove Ecologist Miriam Vihenda and accountant Michael kiema in preparing the report and ensuring the project finances were in order. Behind the scenes, the dedication of our Origination Associates Madeleine Kay and Roan G., HR lead Irene Kitti, and GIS expert Mateus Mendes helped in making the event seamless and successful.

Wishing the team the best of luck as they've been venturing into the site visit this week. We look forward to sharing their experiences and insights from the trip!
