Vision - Repair the World - “Kukarabati Dunia”

Mission - Restore Nature, Support Local Communities, Help the World Achieve Net-Zero by 2050

Who We Are

Avatari Development Kenya (ADK) is a subsidiary of Avatari International. We are their first of many divisions who are implementing these ideas on the ground — including mangrove restoration, coastal ecosystem protection, and community-focused blue-carbon

Avatari International is a company focused on regenerative and nature-based development: eco-infrastructure, blue-carbon, circular-economy systems and sustainability projects.

The Challenge

Kenya continues to face significant deforestation that threatens both ecosystems and livelihoods. Over the past 20 years, the country has lost nearly 11% of its plantation forests, reducing vital tree cover that supports biodiversity, water security, and local economies. Much of this decline is driven by illegal logging and overexploitation of forest resources, which supply commercial timber and construction materials. Limited awareness of the long-term impacts of deforestation further worsens the situation, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable forest management and restoration initiatives.

Our Solution

In partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), our mission is to restore and conserve Kenya’s degraded coastal lands in Lamu and Tana River through large-scale mangrove reforestation and community-led development. Many of these areas have suffered decades of deforestation, erosion, and habitat loss — leaving coastlines exposed and local communities vulnerable. Our goal is to reverse this degradation and rebuild healthy, resilient ecosystems that sustain both people and nature.

Our team is made up of highly skilled professionals, including experts in mangrove restoration, environmental management, and sustainable development. Many have worked on successful reforestation projects in Kenya and internationally, while others were handpicked by the Kenya Forest Service for their proven expertise and integrity. Together, we combine experience, innovation, and dedication to ensure the project’s long-term success.

Finally, we are committed to advancing science and data-driven conservation. We will collect LiDAR data across at least 1,000 hectares and collaborate with KFS and universities to publish research findings. By developing a pilot Mangrove Living Lab, we aim to position Kenya as a regional leader in Blue Carbon Data Science and set a global example in coastal restoration.

We aim to restore an initial 1,650 hectares of mangroves, with a long-term target of 5,000 hectares over five years. This effort will rejuvenate degraded landscapes, protect biodiversity, and create meaningful employment opportunities through planting, maintenance, and conservation work. Participating communities will also receive 40% of net project revenue, ensuring that the people living closest to these forests benefit directly from their restoration and protection.

Beyond replanting, we will safeguard rehabilitated mangroves for 40 years, supporting community patrols that prevent illegal activities and protect these vital ecosystems. We will also provide beekeeping and crab farming initiatives, and build three eco-boardwalks within three years — promoting eco-tourism, sustainable fishing, and strengthening nature-based enterprises.
