International Day of Forests
The International Day of Forests is a globally recognised event dedicated to celebrating the importance of forests around the world. It serves as an awareness day that brings together all stakeholders in the forest sector to highlight the critical role forests play in sustaining life, supporting biodiversity, and contributing to economic development. The day also creates an opportunity for communities living adjacent to forests to interact with government agencies, organisations, and other stakeholders, enabling them to learn more about forest conservation and sustainable management practices.
As part of the celebrations, tree planting activities are often carried out to emphasise the importance of conserving and restoring forest ecosystems. These activities not only demonstrate commitment to environmental protection but also encourage community participation in safeguarding forest resources for future generations.
The theme for this year was “Forests and Economy.” This theme aimed to educate communities and stakeholders on the significant role forests play in supporting economies at both global and local levels.
For Avatari, the event served as a valuable platform to establish its presence as a new organisation operating in within Kenya. It provided an opportunity to engage with the local community and other stakeholders, and to clearly communicate the organisations work in the area, particularly the carbon project. This engagement helped create awareness about the project and how the community stands.
